Over the last decade, profit-driven policies and the tax foreclosure crisis have shifted Detroit from being a city of homeowners to a city of renters. In 2020, 56% of Detroit residents live in rental housing. Detroit Renter City is a small group of concerned housing activists using their knowledge and skills to ensure renters across the city understand the rights they have to resist displacement and exploitation. We are researchers, organizers, and rabble-rousers who understand that housing is a right and that renters are not disposable.
